What Happens to Bitcoin When You Die?
The Bitcoin network does not read death certificates, identify heirs, or provide password resets. What happens next depends on how the bitcoin is held and whether legal and technical preparations exist.
If bitcoin is held by a custodian
An exchange, broker, or other custodian controls the keys and may have an estate or beneficiary process. Heirs generally need to follow that institution’s current requirements. The process can change, so account lists and beneficiary designations need periodic review.

- Confirm the institution through independently verified channels
If bitcoin is self-custodied
There is no company with an administrative override. Access depends on the wallet’s actual spending conditions and the materials required to reconstruct it. A hardware device alone may not be enough, and a seed phrase alone may show an empty wallet if an additional passphrase was used.
- Identify the custody model before attempting recovery
- Do not update firmware or repeatedly guess a PIN
- Do not type recovery words into a website
Legal authority still matters
Possessing a key can create technical control, but estates and beneficiaries are governed by local law and valid documents. Moving funds too early can create disputes or tax and reporting problems.

- Preserve the original state of devices and records
- Seek qualified advice for the relevant jurisdiction
The safest immediate response
Slow down. Secure what was found, record where it was found without copying secrets, and identify legitimate legal and technical help. Anyone who asks for recovery words in a message, website, or video call should be treated as a threat.
