Bitcoin Inheritance Planning: A Practical Starting Guide
Bitcoin inheritance is not one document or one backup. It is a coordinated handoff between legal authority, asset discovery, wallet recovery, prepared people, and ongoing maintenance.
Why ordinary estate plans are not enough
A will can say who should receive an asset, but it cannot recreate a missing private key. Conversely, a person who finds a seed phrase may be able to move bitcoin without automatically having lawful ownership. A usable plan must coordinate both sides.
- Legal title: who is entitled to the asset
- Technical control: who can create a valid transaction
- Human execution: who knows what to do under stress
Start with a non-secret map
The first document should reveal that a plan exists, not reveal the funds. It can identify the executor, a trusted technical contact, the broad custody type, and the offline location of further instructions.
- Do not include recovery words or private keys
- Do not publish wallet addresses or balances
- Keep sensitive configuration separate from legal documents that may become public
Match the plan to the custody model
An exchange account, singlesig hardware wallet, passphrase-protected wallet, multisig setup, and collaborative custody vault all fail differently. The checklist should reflect the actual model rather than applying one universal recovery recipe.
- Singlesig concentrates recovery in one secret
- Passphrases create an easily overlooked second factor
- Multisig may require wallet descriptors or policy files
- Collaborative services add identity, subscription, and provider-continuity questions
Test the first steps
Do not wait for a real emergency to discover that instructions are unclear. Use a wallet containing no meaningful value to practice identifying materials, contacting the right person, and recognizing common scams. The goal is not to reveal your live security setup.
- Review after device or family changes
- Set a fixed annual review date
- Confirm recurring timelock or subscription requirements
